Joaquin Phoenix has been a long time supporter of Animal Welfare and Animal Rights. He worked with PETA to create a video to expose the brutality of the exotic skins industry. It provides people with shoes – belts – purses – briefcases and gloves made from the skins of snakes – crocodiles – alligators and lizards.

Many of these animals are skinned alive. After they are skinned their bodies are tossed onto a pile. Cold blooded creatures, because they have a slow metabolism,  can live for as long as 2 or 3 days after they are skinned. Their suffering would be unspeakable. There is a mis-guided belief that if an animal is skined alive that the leather will be more supple.

If you care – speak up! There are amazing alternatives to “blood leather” that are available in the marketplace. Start by asking in the stores where you shop if they have cruelty free products. If they do not – then let them know that you will not be shopping with them – until they offer you items that are cruelty free. In this, the Chinese Year of The Snake – make a difference for these creatures!
