Suffering and Dying At The Yulin Dog Eating Festival In China

Is This Any Way To Treat A Dog – The annual dog meat eating festival – coinciding with the summer solstice is scheduled to take place on June 21 – June 22, 2015. As it does every year – it draws out fans of dog meat consumption for a good old, finger lickig’ – jaw chompin’ good time. Fun with the parents and the kiddies. Not so much fun for the dogs!

The Chinese claim “tradition and ancestral culture” as their watchwords for this yearly festival of grotesque abuse, pain and suffering. There is a sick belief that if an animal is tortured before it dies that the meat will taste better. With this in mind the dogs are killed in front of each other – hung – skinned alive, boiled alive, blow-torched – stomped on and beaten with pipes and sticks. Their mouths are often bound tightly shut with ropes, tape or wire so they have no relief from their pain and fear by panting. Their front legs may be dislocated by tying them behind their shoulders.

Many of these animals are stolen pets used to human interaction and caring. The terror and suffering they endue is beyond anything we can imagine.

Many Chinese citizens are opposed to this treatment of animals – and Chinese animal activists who are growing in numbers – are on the ground in Yulin. Some of the torture, killing and eating activity may have gone underground to avoid scrutiny by activists and any media who may be covering the event. It is estimated that up to 10,000 dogs and cats will be tortured to death and consumed over the next few days.

Please have a look at past images from dog meat caging and killing to really put it into perspective. As you scroll down – perhaps say a silent prayer for the animals who will die over the next three to four days. Their lives are NOT ours to take! China is a global consuming behemoth – shame on their treatment of animals.
