Canadians Are Nice – Eh?

Canadians Are Participating In The Global Lion March – Canada used to enjoy a rather envious global reputation. Individually we were seen as decent, polite, often apologetic, kind and caring people. As a nation Canada was – a stalwart ally ready to engage her citizens in combat –  a global peace keeper – forward thinking – inventive – generous and steady.  In short – you wanted Canada on your side.

How things have changed with the ever-shifting political landscape. Our environmental laws are in a shambles – immigration takes forever – the Alberta Tar Sands are an abomination – our Senate is an embarrassment – our current government is the next best thing to a dictatorship – we spy on our friends – tisk tisk Canada  – I hardly recognize you!

When it comes to our concern for animals – our federal animal welfare laws are from 1892 and reforms to these laws have been defeated twice in recent years. So big picture – animals in Canada are deemed to be “property” and the Canadian Government doesn’t care that they have no rights.

Fortunatey – individual Canadians are animal loving people and many of us are working on animal issues in Canada and abroad. In October 2013 around 450 Torontonians marched in the International Elephant March to protest against the ivory trade.

We are about to put our sneakers on again for the Global Lion March. On March 15, 2014 – Canadians will be protesting in Vancouver – Calgary –  Toronto and Ottawa. We will raise our voices in a common ROAR that will be heard around the world – as people in 55 cities denounce the evil that is the “Canned Lion Hunting” industry!

Doesn’t It Make You Feel All Warm & Fuzzy Knowing That A Canadian You Might Know Would Kill A Defenceless Lion

Because in case you think that a “Canadian” wouldn’t hunt a lion in this heinous and cowardly fashion – here are the figures from CITES that prove our involvement in this depraved human activity. This is not a hunt it is a slaughter and the people involved in it are thrill-seeking, boastful and morally vacant cowards.

2007 –  8 lion trophy exports from South Africa to Canada (7 captive bred & 1 ‘wild’)

2008 –  20 lion trophy exports from South Africa to Canada (16 captive bred & 4 ‘wild’)

2009 –  23 lion trophy exports from South Africa to Canada (15 captive bred & 8 ‘wild’)

2010 – 7 lion trophy exports from South Africa to Canada (all captive bred)

2011 – 6 lion trophy exports from South Africa to Canada (all captive bred)

The grand total = 64

51 captive bred lions

13 wild lions – an endangered animal.

So come out and march with us on March 15, 2014 and then lobby the Canadian Government to pass laws forbidding the importation of lion head trophies – hides and body parts into Canada. As a nation we should be better than this – sadly we are not.
