From Confusion Comes Clarity

Short Stories From 10 Years Ago – October 21, 2004 – The task of analysing and re-orienting my approach to business and developing my new Web Sites is proving to be a much larger nut to crack than I’d anticipated. I’ve had a few days of overwhelmedness followed by some new ideas, then a reversal back into confusion. Then finally tonight a sharp twist around to some clarity.

A light fog is still floating over my thoughts, but it’s vanishing bit by bit. It really helps to talk things through with friends, who don’t have a vested interest in the outcome. Objectivity is a thing of beauty and so easy for someone else to have. I’m standing right in the middle of the muddle and can’t see outside the puddle – only the swamp at the edges. Hence the feelings of being overwhelmed, especially about my Web Sites.

I had a long talk with my friend Morgan tonight. He knows a thing or two about computer programming, HTML, databases and code. I’m learning, but I just don’t know the technical side of things, and consequently I don’t know the questions to ask. This is the problem. As Morgan pointed out, I not sure what all the terms mean so I have no idea if the time frame is reasonable, if the estimated development hours are accurate, what design should cost and what I’ll end up with. I can’t make a decision because I don’t have enough information. That’s why I feeling befuddled.

I had no sooner said good-bye to Morgan when Dorothy called to say hello. She had some excellent comments as well about what I can accomplish on my own. She thinks I should re-group as well and not spend as much money as I’ve been contemplating without fully understanding exactly what I’m getting in return. I need to think about where and how I’m going to market my freshly minted sites so they will accomplish the ultimate goal – which is to act as a resource for my clients and to bring me new business.

I am a good, solid decision maker and I hardly ever regret the conclusions I come to, so it’s unusual for me to be so bewildered. After I spoke to Dorothy I needed to clear my head, so I went down to the kitchen and made three more Inukshuk. They are totally different from the Christmas Inukshuk 12 and each one has a personality all its own. I know one will be perfect for a friend. And the other two – one is for Augie and the other for Ziggy.

Now that the grunge work of the Inukshuk is done – building them is a lot of fun. It also took my mind off business overload and put my focus instead on something creative. It’s now one o’clock in the morning and time to call it a day. Tomorrow will bring with it a new set of challenges, but I will have had a snooze in the meantime and be better prepared to deal with them.

That may well be a good motto to live by – “When in doubt – have a nap”. I’ll be talking to you again tomorrow, but for now – Ciao Bella.
